Attractions of Munich
Munich is the capital city of the state of Bavaria, in Germany, and sits on the River Isar. Munich is the third largest city in Germany, with around 1.35 million people living within the city limits. Munich has a long history which has left the city with plenty of culture for the interested traveller to absorb.
The main site of the Deutsches Museum (German Museum) is located on an island of the River Isar, and is one of the oldest science museums in the world, as well as being one of the largest. The Deutsches Museum attracts around 1.5 million visitors a year with an impressive collection of around 28,000 objects from 50 different fields of science and technology, and is a recommended attraction for visitors of all ages.
Munich is also home to several important art galleries in the area of the city known as the Kunstareal (art district). A visit to this area of the city is recommended for serious art buffs and curious novices alike. With pieces on show to pretty much the whole art world – classic art and sculpture, world art and modern art is featured in the various different galleries. The Alte Pinakothek is one of the oldest art galleries in the world, and home to a fine collection of Old Master Paintings. In contrast to the ‘Alte’ (old), the Neue Pinakothek features 19th Century art, while the Pinakothek der Moderne features – you guessed it – modern art.
As well as this rich visual culture, Munich is home to the National Theatre, where several of Wagner’s operas were premiered, and is the home of the Bavarian State Opera. Do be prepared to book tickets in advance of your trip if you fancy sampling some of this high culture, as the opera is very popular.
No overview of Munich would be complete without a mention of Oktoberfest, the 16 day festival which is one of the most popular annual events in Germany. For those that prefer to partake in culture a little less high brow than the opera, Oktoberfest is the place to sample some truly world class beer, which the locals imbibe in significant quantities with some gusto! This is accompanied by some serious feasting on traditional fare like Sweinsbraten (roast pork), and a massive selection of Wurstl (sausages). If you are looking for accommodation during Oktoberfest, online operators like Octopus Travel can be a useful place to start when you are looking for Munich hotels, as are some of the travel review websites.
