Winterising Your Second Home
Cabin owners often prepare to leave their summer and fall abode with the setting in of the cold weather. A cabin can be a fine investment and a lovely second home, so if you own one, you should do everything to protect your property. You need to winterise or prepare your cabin for winter weather to safeguard the heating and plumbing systems, as well as other items. More importantly, you need to take the necessary precautions to deter intruders.
Part of keeping unwelcome guests out of your cabin while you are away is removing valuables whenever possible. Although it may be a bit of a trouble to take home appliances, it may be the only thing that will keep thieves at bay. That way, your cabin becomes less tempting for trespassers.
Depending on where your cabin is, you may install an alarm system. If your property is situated on a fairly secluded area, it would be futile to place an alarm. However, if the odds of other people hearing distress signals are high, then consider adding the scare factor to your cabin.
While you are away, you need to clear your property from all food items. This is because not all intruders are humans. This is particularly true for cabins located in prime wilderness. Additionally, consider blocking chimneys from the inside and sealing any cracks and openings to keep out insects and animals. Place barriers over windows and doors to keep out potential invaders. Make your cabin a strong fortress to discourage animal intrusions.
If you winterise or equip your cabin as you leave it during the cold season, you will save yourself from a disheartening scenario of an invaded cabin come summer, spring, or fall vacation.
