Things to do in Nice
Nice is located on the coast of the Mediterranean in the south of France, and is the capital of the French Riviera. Nicknamed Nice le Belle (Nice the Beautiful), the welcoming climate of the city makes Nice a great place for a city breaks.
As well as the nice weather (pardon the pun), there is plenty of culture to absorb in this historic city, both old and new. The Musee d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporian features, perhaps unsurprisingly, a good collection of art from the Nice school, as well as Pop Art and New Realism. For more classic art, the Musee Matisse features a large collection of the famous artist’s paintings and drawings, and is located within a picturesque 17th Century villa.
For those that want to enjoy the sunshine but are not keen on the hordes that can sometimes descend on the Med during the summer, many of the hotels offer private beaches featuring little luxuries such as carpets leading over the pebbles to the sea, and the chance to dine at the water’s edge. There is also a good variety of watersports available.
Wine buffs will welcome the availability of organic and bio dynamically produced wine, which has been produced with minimal interference from chemicals. The experienced connoisseur and those new to wine alike will find a great selection of some of the best wines produced in France on offer in the bistros and cafes of Nice, where experienced staff can provide good recommendations to suit a variety of pallets.
If you perhaps get a little too enthusiastic with the wine tasting, and find yourself in need of a little help recuperating, there are lots of spas on hand to offer rejuvenating treatments – including one that specialises in offering baths of melted chocolate!
No visit to Nice would be complete without sampling some of the local delicacy of Socca. Socca is a kind of chick pea crepe which is a speciality of southern French cuisine, and especially popular in Nice – and tastes great when eaten al fresco. If you are planning a visit to the city, Octopus Travel can be a good place to start when checking out Nice hotels.
